Somali who got probation for rapes now facing federal charges

Daily Caller News Foundation

A Somali migrant who entered the country during the Obama administration is facing federal charges tied to a series of rapes after state courts sentenced him to probation, the Justice Department announced Thursday.

Abdimahat Bille Mohamed is being charged with kidnapping a minor and kidnapping in connection with at least five incidents from 2017 to 2025, according to a release sent Thursday. Mohamed had previously been convicted twice on state rape charges, but in both cases had been sentenced to probation, Minneapolis-based Fox 9 reported.

“He committed the rape of a child, a horrific rape, in 2017. Then he committed another rape in 2024. He’s arrested in state court, lives in the Minneapolis area the entire time, last name Mohammed, he’s 28 years old,” Attorney General Pam Bondi said during a Friday “Fox and Friends” appearance. “He’s convicted in state court of both rapes. They let him walk out out the door on probation. Double rapist. Pled to ‘em, walked out the door.”

“Then, under our administration, he commits a new rape. He is arrested. He is in federal custody,” Bondi continued. “We are going back in time now, charging him again with kidnapping and the rape of the 2017 case. And I can tell you there are more charges to come. And, again, this is good police work. They took his DNA, ran his DNA through databases for all these unsolved rapes, so let’s wait and see how many charges come after that.”

United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is surging into the Minneapolis area to target illegal immigrants from Somalia after revelations about at least $1 billion in fraud, some of which reportedly went to the radical Islamic terrorist group Al-Shabaab. Democratic Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota admitted Sunday that the state “attracts criminals,” but demanded that Somali residents not be demonized during an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

Bondi hinted that Mohamed may not be the only instance where the federal government exercises “concurrent jurisdiction” to address crime.

“We’re finding out that all these criminals around the country were not properly prosecuted by liberal state courts, so we were able to charge him federally with a new case, a new case, and now his DNA is being run through databases throughout our country,” Bondi said. “So, again, he’s innocent until proven guilty of the new one, but he had entered pleas on the last one — the last two. One involved a 15-year-old girl. The second one, he held a woman in a hotel room for days and days and days and raped her repeatedly.”
