Immigration judge sues DOJ after termination, Trump admin answers by firing 8 more!

President Donald Trump’s administration just proved that it won’t be swayed by legal threats.

On Monday, Ohio Judge Tania Nemer slapped the Department of Justice (DOJ) with a discrimination suit claiming that she was terminated from her position due to her gender, her Lebanese citizenship and her past as a Democrat candidate for local office.

But on Tuesday, the Trump administration released eight more Manhattan immigration judges who worked out of the 26 Federal Plaza, according to the National Association of Immigration Judges.

According to a NAIJ official, an estimated 200 immigration judges have resigned or been let go as part of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) efforts to slim down the federal government. About 100 of those people were fired, the official said.

“The judges were terminated despite a backlog of 3.4 million immigration cases in the federal system, according to Syracuse University’s TRAC Reports,” the New York Post reported.

“The War Department said in September it planned to send 600 military lawyers to serve temporarily as immigration judges — but so far only 25 have gone through the required training and have begun hearing cases, the NAIJ official said.”

Nemer’s lawsuit was filed in a Washington DC federal court, and claims that she was fired on February 5 as a result of her unsuccessful run for office earlier in her career. She alleges that her constitutional rights were violated by the termination, but the DOJ says that her sacking was part of a “lawful exercise” of the president’s authority to fire employees. Nemer is demanding to be reinstated to her judgeship, which began under former President Joe Biden in 2023.
