Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy suggests dressing up when you fly

Department of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy wants to bring “civility” back to air travel.

There was a time when traveling by air was an event that one dressed up for, as men donned their suits and women wore pumps and skirts. Now, a quick glance around the airport will provide more of a lackadaisical type of airport fashion. People often put on little more than their pajamas to travel now, and Duffy wants to put an end to it.

“[President] Donald Trump talks about the ‘Golden Age of Transportation,’ the ‘Golden Age of America,’ but the golden age in transportation truly begins with you, the traveler,” Duffy explained. “If you watch social media, brawls at the baggage claim. You have passengers berating gate agents, you have unruly passengers on airplanes. People dress up like they’re going to bed when they fly. I see people getting on airplanes and they’re having a hard time taking their luggage and getting it in the overhead bin. Help people out, be nice, be courteous.”

“And so we want to push people, as we come into a really busy travel season, help people. Be in a good mood, dress up, bring civility back to travel, and I think everyone’s experience is going to be that much better,” he concluded.

While some people believe that comfort should take priority during such an uncomfortable experience as travel, etiquette expert Diane Gottsman believes that a courteous appearance doesn’t have to mean an uncomfortable ensemble.

“From an etiquette perspective, one’s pajamas should be reserved for the privacy of one’s own home or hotel room, where people are relaxing — and not in a public space,” she said, adding that it is possible for travellers to “still select clothing that is both comfortable, practical and appropriate for public spaces.”
