Mayor-elect Mamdani reiterates intention to arrest Netanyahu

New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani is not giving up on his crusade against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

This week, he reiterated his intention to honor the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) warrant for Netanyahu’s arrest, should the Israeli leader ever visit New York City under his leadership. This is a position that he has maintained since his campaign, which was quite popular among the anti-Israel leftists in New York.

In an interview with ABC7, he made it clear that he believes New York City to be “a city of international law.”

“I’ve said time and again, I believe this is a city of international law. And being a city of international law means looking to uphold international law, and that means upholding the warrants from the International Criminal Court, whether they’re for Benjamin Netanyahu or [Russian President] Vladimir Putin. I think that that’s critically important to showcase our values, and unlike [President] Donald Trump, I’m someone who looks to exist within the confines of the laws that we have, so I am going to look to exhaust every legal possibility not to create my own laws to do so,” he said.

While he has acknowledged that the United States is not required to uphold ICC warrants, as it is not one of the countries that is a signatory to the treaty, Mamdani still believes it is best to comply with its wishes while “abiding with all of the laws in front of us.”

Meanwhile, Adams is encouraging Netanyahu to visit NYC and even attend Mamdani’s inauguration as a show of goodwill.

“I believe the prime minister should visit the city. I think he should start with the inauguration ceremony of Mamdani in the presence of the City Council on January 1 to send a strong message to the largest Jewish community outside Israel. He needs to make clear to the entire community that he will continue visiting the city as often as possible, and he should begin on January 1,” he said during an interview with Israel Hayom.

“I think many of us are disappointed by the election results,” he added. “But we must not in any way allow the energy coming from the victory of the Democratic Socialists of America and Zohran to do anything that damages the atmosphere for Jewish New Yorkers or the relationship between Israel and the city. Mamdani has already declared that he intends to advance several initiatives, such as canceling the IRA definition of antisemitism, as well as the possibility that he will shut down our Office for the Prevention of Antisemitism.”
