Democratic Seattle Mayor-elect and self-described socialist Katie Wilson boasted in a Tuesday X post that she no longer requires financial assistance from her parents to pay for childcare.
Wilson, an activist who has been widely compared to socialist Democratic New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, unseated incumbent Democratic Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell on Nov. 12. She wrote on X that her new role as Seattle mayor, which pays about $230,000, will allow her to get off her parents’ dole for expensive childcare.
“After much deliberation and a grueling interview process, I’m pleased to announce that I’ve accepted a new job and will not need any financial support from my parents to cover the high costs of childcare going forward,” Wilson wrote.
Wilson’s husband is unemployed, while both of her parents are academics. She pushed socialist policies during her campaign, including expressing support in September for establishing government-run grocery stores in Seattle.
Moreover, Wilson committed to “appoint a cabinet of exceptional leaders whose lived experiences reflect the diversity of Seattle’s Black, Indigenous, Asian and Pacific Islander, Latinx/Hispanic, and People of Color communities as well as that of women, immigrants and refugees, 2SLGBTQIA+ communities, people with disabilities, people of all faith traditions, and residents from every socioeconomic background,” according to her campaign website.
Her platform also emphasizes “climate action and environmental justice,” “police accountability,” “racial equity” and raising “new progressive revenue,” according to the website.
Wilson dubbed herself a “socialist” during an interview with The Seattle Times published on Sept. 13.
