Trump says he’s ‘obligated’ to sue BBC for ‘anywhere between a billion and five billion dollars’

President Donald Trump has officially gone on record to address his legal action against the BBC.

On Monday, BizPac Review reported that the president’s legal team sent an official notice to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) demanding they retract “false, defamatory, disparaging, and inflammatory statements” made about Trump on a January 6 documentary. On Friday, the president himself clarified that the lawsuit will be for anywhere between $1 billion and $5 billion if the company chooses to allow the offending statements to stand.

“We’ll sue them for anywhere between a billion and $5 billion probably sometime next week,” he said while speaking to reporters on Air Force One.

The BBC responded in a statement on Thursday, revealing that an official legal response has been sent to the president’s team, as well as a personal letter sent directly from BBC chair Samir Shah.”

“Lawyers for the BBC have written to President Trump’s legal team in response to a letter received on Sunday,” said a spokesperson. “BBC chair Samir Shah has separately sent a personal letter to the White House making clear to President Trump that he and the corporation are sorry for the edit of the president’s speech on 6 January 2021, which featured in the programme.”

In a separate interview with British news channel GBN, he explained the logic behind such a fantastical lawsuit.

Watch:

“I think I have an obligation to do it,” Trump said. “Look, I’m not looking to get into lawsuits, but I think I have an obligation to do it. This was so egregious. If you don’t do it, you don’t stop it from happening again with other people. I think we probably do have an obligation.”

“I’d like to find out why they did it so bad. Who thinks like this? And I wonder if they’ve done it, we’ll find this out in the next part of the litigation, we’ll find out  how many times they’ve done it to other people,” he continued. “Maybe they’ve done it to me quite a bit.”
