Christine Pelosi, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s daughter, announced her candidacy for the California state Senate on Monday — passing on a potential run to replace her retiring mother in Congress.
The younger Pelosi said in a video statement posted to X that she will “organize power for the people,” also pledging to fight for “women’s rights” and “consumer rights” if she is elected to California’s state Senate. The campaign launch comes after the former Speaker announced on Thursday that she is not running for reelection to the House in 2026, spurring rumors that her daughter could be a potential contender for the open seat in Congress.
“I’m running to represent you, San Francisco, in Sacramento,” the younger Pelosi said in her candidacy announcement video. “What do we do when our freedoms are under attack? We speak up, we fight back and we organize. Power for the people.”
Other Democratic candidates running for Pelosi’s open House seat include Saikat Chakrabarti, who had served as New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s chief of staff and campaign manager, as well as Democratic California State Sen. Scott Wiener, who is well-known for taking far-left stances on LGBTQ issues. Both candidates announced their bids for Pelosi’s congressional district before she announced her decision to retire on Thursday.
Wiener notably authored a bill that exempted some people who had sexual relations with minors from being required to register as sex offenders — which Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed into law in 2020.
Moreover, former San Francisco Mayor London Breed, also a Democrat, told Politico on Friday that she is weighing a run to succeed Pelosi in Congress.
The younger Pelosi is a former San Francisco prosecutor and also represents the Golden State on the Democratic National Committee, The Sacramento Bee reported on Monday.
