Jurors on Thursday acquitted a former Department of Justice (DOJ) official who threw a sandwich at a federal agent in Washington, D.C., The Washington Post reported.
Sean Dunn, a former international affairs specialist in the DOJ’s Criminal Division, was found not guilty of a misdemeanor charge over the August incident after the jury deliberated for seven hours over two days, according to the outlet. Dunn attacked the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agent to protest so-called fascism and migrant deportations.
“I did it. I threw a sandwich,” Dunn reportedly said in footage viewed by jurors. “I did it to draw them away from where they were. I succeeded.”
“He did it, he threw the sandwich,” Dunn’s attorney told the jury in her opening statement during the trial, CBS News reported. She reportedly added that he had “strong feelings” about President Donald Trump’s policies. Trump announced a crackdown on D.C. crime in August that involved increased federal law enforcement presence and National Guard troops protecting high-profile public areas.
Dunn was screaming profanity and calling federal agents “fascists” before hurling the sandwich, the DOJ said in court documents. The alleged victim testified that the hoagie “exploded all over” his uniform and left an onion string hanging near his personal radio, CBS News previously reported.
The DOJ announced Dunn’s firing from the agency in August after his arrest. “If you touch any law enforcement officer, we will come after you,” Attorney General Pam Bondi said.
Grand jurors rejected the DOJ’s original felony assault charge, forcing prosecutors to downgrade to a misdemeanor, The Washington Post reported.
