Radio host Charlamagne tha God urged the Democratic Party on “The Breakfast Club” Wednesday to end the ongoing government shutdown after their election victories on Tuesday.
Democrats, including New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, Virginia Gov.-elect Abigail Spanberger and New Jersey Gov.-elect Mikie Sherrill are all projected to have won their races by large margins. Charlamagne said on his show that it was time for the Democratic Party to cease using the American people as political pawns.

“It’s time to open the government back up, y’all. Dems, you had a great night last night. The premiums have already gone up,” Charlamagne said. “They are set for the year. It’s time to move on. We appreciate the fight, the valiant effort, but come on, man. People got rent due. People got child care to pay for, light bills, car notes.”
“I feel for all those federal workers who have missed two paychecks already, especially when most of them are living paycheck to paycheck,” he continued. “People are not getting their SNAP [Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program] benefits. It’s time to reopen the government. I don’t care whose fault it was. Let’s stop playing politics with people’s lives.”
Republican Oklahoma Sen. Markwayne Mullin asserted on Fox Business’ “The Evening Edit” Tuesday that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer privately pushed Democratic senators to postpone reopening the government until after Election Day.
“Chuck Schumer in a private meeting with other Democrat senators said that if you’ll just wait till after the election, I’ll release the handcuffs,” Mullin said. “I added the handcuffs part, but basically I’m paraphrasing what he said.”
“The reason why is because they’re afraid their base wouldn’t show up today in Virginia, New Jersey and in New York. So it’s been about politics,” he said. “It’s never been about policy. It’s been about holding the American people as leverage points regardless of the damage they cause to the livelihood of these individuals. But elections are more important than the Dems because they know their polls are at the very bottom than it’s ever been for the Democrat Party.”
As the shutdown dragged into Wednesday, it became the longest on record at 36 days.
However, certain members of the Democratic Party’s left flank had indicated before the election that favorable results for the party should inspire a continuation of the shutdown until their demands are met.
