Trump plan for ‘enforcement force’ in Gaza goes to UN Security Council

President Donald Trump has submitted a proposal to the United Nations (UN) proposing a two-year, international peacekeeping force in Gaza, Axios reported Monday.

The force, which the U.S. has characterized as an “enforcement force” with multiple nations in the region participating, will be overseen by the Gaza “Board of Peace” outlined in Trump’s initial ceasefire proposal laid out in October, according to a draft obtained by Axios. While brief skirmishes have thrown the ceasefire between Hamas and Israel into question, the overall peace has so far held while Israel continues to press Gaza for the bodies of deceased hostages.

The “International Security Force” (ISF) would be “ensuring the process of demilitarizing the Gaza Strip, including the destruction and prevention of rebuilding of military, terror, and offensive infrastructure, as well as the permanent decommissioning of weapons from non-state armed groups,” according to the draft.

The ISF will also establish a “Palestinian technocratic, apolitical committee of competent Palestinians from the Strip” as proposed in the initial ceasefire agreement. The proposal also invites the UN, Red Cross and Red Crescent to provide aid, saying that any misuse of aid from the organizations will result in their ousting from the Gaza Strip.

The force will also oversee the “permanent decommissioning of weapons from non-state armed groups,” which would seem to imply that the force will work to disarm Hamas, according to Axios. The terrorist organization has so far not relinquished power while carrying out executions of rivals in the region.

The State Department did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
