Abigail Spanberger takes a shot at Mamdani, accuses him of lying to voters

Daily Caller News Foundation

Democratic Virginia gubernatorial candidate Abigail Spanberger accused Democratic New York City mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani on Friday of lying to voters about several of his campaign promises.

Spanberger told CNN that Mamdani will never be able to pass his plan for government-run grocery stores and buses, despite making that a central part of his campaign. She stated that “vulnerable people” who believe in Mamdani will be disappointed when he cannot get his agenda passed.

“People do want us to be aspirational and dream big. They also don’t want us to lie to them,” Spanberger said. “When you have a party that makes promise after promise, and then say, ‘Oh, we passed it in the House, it’s not our fault’ — vulnerable people believed you. Maybe he is going to get Albany on board with totally refinancing public transportation. But there’s a lot of people who believe him.”

Spanberger also said that she is more likely to break 50% of the vote in her state than Mamdani is in one city, according to CNN.

Mamdani is planning to freeze rent, create an agency to respond to non-violent 911 calls, raise the minimum wage to $30 per hour, and raise taxes, according to his campaign website.

Many national Democrats have hesitated to endorse Mamdani, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who gave a last-minute endorsement to Mamdani on Oct. 24. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has not endorsed Mamdani, and New York Rep. Tom Suozzi endorsed Mamdani’s opponent, Andrew Cuomo.

Spanberger has held a solid lead in the Virginia race against her opponent, Republican lieutenant governor Winsome Earle-Sears, who is currently leading by an average of 9.6 points, according to RealClearPolitics. She has refused to call on Democratic attorney general candidate Jay Jones to drop out following the leak of his text messages, where he fantasized about putting “two bullets” in the head of former Republican House Speaker Todd Gilbert and watching Gilbert’s children die in their mother’s arms.
