NY Times admits Trump ‘has a point’ when saying SNAP recipients are ‘largely Democrats’

The New York Times addressed President Donald Trump’s claim that SNAP benefit recipients are “largely Democrats.”

Speaking to reporters while aboard Air Force One on his way to Mar-a-Lago for a Great Gatsby-themed Halloween bash, Trump spoke about the looming SNAP cuts amid the continued government shutdown. Millions of Americans are currently in fear that their next month of food assistance will not be delivered, and the president isn’t shy about pointing the finger of blame.

Watch:

“On the SNAP benefits set to expire tomorrow, folks are talking about putting out canned goods and non-perishables for trick-or-treaters. Is there a possibility, like you did with the military moving around funds, is there a possibility to do that?” NewsNation White House correspondent Kellie Meyer asked.

“Well, it always is, but all the Democrats have to do is say, let’s go. I mean, you know, they don’t have to do anything. They don’t, all they have to do is, say, the government is open. And we only need five Democrats,” the president pointed out. “But they’re, you know, they’ve become a radical left party. They really have, they’ve become a very radical left party. And they’ve lost their minds. They’ve lost their minds. All they have to do, is say the government is open and that’s the end of it.”

“And you know largely, when you talk about SNAP, you’re talking about largely Democrats, but… I’m president. I want to help everybody. I want to help Democrats and Republicans,” he added. “But when you’re talking about SNAP, if you look, it’s largely Democrats hurting their own people. Thank you very much, everybody.”

News outlets rushed to “debunk” Trump’s claim that Democrats “largely” make up SNAP’s recipients, but even The New York Times had to admit that Trump “has a point.”

“The New York Times was unable to find any recent breakdowns of the political leanings of SNAP recipients. Older surveys and proxy measures show that Mr. Trump has a point that Democrats tend to represent slightly more SNAP recipients. Nonetheless, Republicans still represent a sizable number of people who receive food assistance,” the outlet reported.
