Gayle King is reportedly preparing to step down as co-host of CBS Mornings next year as part of a sweeping overhaul under new parent company Paramount Skydance.
King’s contract runs through May and is said to be in discussions about transitioning into a new role within the network’s news division as Paramount’s leadership reshapes the organization from the top down, according to Variety. Executives at CBS are reportedly eager to keep King under contract by offering her the opportunity to develop her own programs or specials under the network’s banner.
A CBS spokesperson, however, insisted no formal talks about her contract have taken place and said that King remains a valued part of CBS.
“There have been no discussions with Gayle about her contract that runs through May 2026. She’s a truly valued part of CBS and we look forward to engaging with her about the future,” the spokesperson told Variety.
King’s rumored exit follows what one insider called a “bloodbath” of layoffs across CBS News and its parent company. The sweeping cuts reportedly wiped out nearly the entire “race and culture” unit and affected roughly 100 network staffers.
CBS is cutting “Saturday Morning” co-hosts Michelle Miller and Dana Jacobson as part of a major overhaul of the program, the New York Post reported. The network is also canceling its streaming shows “CBS Mornings Plus” and “CBS Evening News Plus.”
“CBS Evening News” co-host John Dickerson said Monday that he will leave the network in December. After Paramount’s $150 million purchase of The Free Press, Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison appointed Bari Weiss as editor-in-chief of CBS News, who is now reportedly trying to recruit Fox News’ Bret Baier and Salem Radio Network’s Scott Jennings.
