Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez screamed at the top of her lungs on Sunday as she pandered to as many minority groups as she could come up with at a rally for Democratic New York City mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani.
Ocasio-Cortez named the Jews, blacks escaping Jim Crow, Latinos, Native Americans, the Irish and Italians as the people who built New York City while she campaigned for Mamdani in Queens. The pro-Mamdani crowd enthusiastically cheered while the congresswoman shouted for nearly a minute.
“This city was built by the Irish escaping famine. Italians fleeing fascism. Jews escaping the Holocaust. Black Americans feeling slavery and Jim Crow! Latinos seeking a better life,” Ocasio-Cortez shouted. “Native peoples standing for themselves. Asian Americans coming together in Queens, in Brooklyn, in the Bronx, in Manhattan, in Staten Island! In this country, in a vision to build the freest, the toughest and the greatest city on Earth!”
WATCH:
Ocasio-Cortez has been a staunch supporter of Mamdani, the avowed socialist and frontrunner of the New York City mayoral race. She blasted Democratic New York Rep. Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer in September for delaying their endorsements of Mamdani.
Jeffries finally endorsed Mamdani on Friday after months of dodging any questions about his support of the socialist candidate. Other congressional Democrats have been reluctant to support Mamdani but have been showing their support in recent weeks as the polling suggests he will be the city’s next mayor.
Mamdani has promised to implement rent freezes, raise the minimum wage to $30 per hour, open government-run grocery stores and busing. He also plans to create an agency that would send mental health professionals to respond to 911 calls.
During the rally, Ocasio-Cortez, Mamdani and Independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders stated that electing Mamdani would create a one-on-one fight against President Donald Trump.
