Trump names Dem city where he’s ‘strongly recommending’ sending National Guard to tackle crime

President Donald Trump said during a press conference on Wednesday that he is “strongly recommending” the National Guard be deployed to San Francisco to help crack down on crime in the city.

Since August, Trump has sent the National Guard to cities including Washington, D.C., Chicago and Memphis as part of his campaign to clean up crime in the U.S. Trump — speaking in the Oval Office alongside FBI Director Kash Patel, Attorney General Pam Bondi, and Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche — said there are still “great cities” that can be “fixed.”

“When I campaigned, I talked about crime, but I never knew that we were going to get into it like we did. I used to watch these cities with the murders,’” Trump said. “I tell you what, the people in Chicago and the people in places like that, that could be fixed. At some point, it gets to where you can’t fix it anymore. It’s too far gone. We have some cities like that, but these are great cities that could be fixed.”

“I’m going to be strongly recommending, at the request of government officials, which is always nice, that you start looking at San Francisco. I think we can make San Francisco, there’s one of our great cities, 10 years ago, 15 years ago, and now it’s a mess, and we have great support in San Francisco,” Trump added. “So I’d like to recommend that for inclusion, maybe in your next group. You’ll get great support.”

Trump first deployed the National Guard to the nation’s capital on Aug. 11 after a wave of crimes drew national attention. Following a drop in Washington, D.C.’s crime rate, Trump sent troops to other cities not only to crack down on crime but also as protests against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities surged in various areas throughout the U.S.

In June, the National Guard and Marines were deployed to the federal building in downtown Los Angeles after riots and protests broke out. During the unrest, activists burned Waymo cars, repeatedly assaulted federal officials, and vandalized buildings with graffiti, causing millions of dollars in damage.

The decision prompted Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom to file a lawsuit. On Sept. 2, a Clinton-appointed federal judge ruled the deployment violated the law.

Democrats claim that California’s major cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco aren’t plagued with crime, homelessness, and other issues. Some residents, however, said otherwise.

In March 2024, a group of San Francisco residents living in the city’s most crime-ridden neighborhood sued the city over its open-air drug markets and homelessness crisis, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The lawsuit, filed on behalf of four unnamed Tenderloin residents and the Phoenix and Best Western hotels, alleged that city policies allowed the drug crisis to persist while officials tolerated criminal activity.

Newsom’s office did not respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
