Fox News chief political analyst Brit Hume broke down what he said is the deeper meaning behind Democratic New York City mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani and his constant focus on “affordability.”
Mamdani rose to prominence on an agenda that includes universal child care, free buses, city-run grocery stores, and a rent freeze on stabilized apartments. During a discussion on “Special Report with Bret Baier,” Hume said Mamdani’s rhetoric about making life more affordable echoes a familiar Democratic playbook.
“Particularly in a time of inflation, prices rising and a job market being tough for a lot of people, affordability was, you know, it’s just another way of running on the economy,” Hume told Baier.
Hume said that behind the appealing language lies a heavy reliance on taxpayer money.

“But when you ask these answers, they always come down to taxpayer money being used to subsidize people to provide all these wonderful free services. The country has turned away from that in the past,” Hume said.
Hume suggested that while New York remains one of the most liberal states in the country, its voters appear willing to repeat old experiments and seek what they consider big-government solutions.
“New York’s a pretty liberal place, so I guess voters up there seem prepared to try it all again. I doubt it’ll work out, but they seem ready to try it again,” Hume said.
Mamdani holds a commanding lead in the New York City mayor’s race, drawing support from 46% of likely voters, a New York Times/Siena College poll showed in September. His backing is strongest among younger and highly educated voters, while former Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo trails at 24%, followed by Curtis Sliwa at 15% and Democratic Mayor Eric Adams at 9%.
Mamdani said at a rally of 3,000 supporters that his campaign had “won the battle over the soul of the Democratic Party.” But when asked by the Daily Caller News Foundation, 11 Senate Democrats either distanced themselves from Mamdani or refused to comment on his claim.
“I tend to focus on Michigan and not on Manhattan politics,” Michigan Sen. Elissa Slotkin told the DCNF when asked if Mamdani’s campaign won the “soul” of the party.
