Chicago Ald. Jessie Fuentes handcuffed after interfering with ICE operations

A Chicago alderwoman was handcuffed by federal agents for allegedly interfering with an immigration operation.

Jessie Fuentes was “joined by dozens of people, including other elected leaders,” according to WGN9, in her protest of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents at the Humboldt Park Hospital. She demanded to know if they had a warrant for the undocumented patient inside the building, and demanded the authorities let the man speak with an attorney.

She was placed in handcuffs, but was later released.

Watch:

The man was in the hospital for a broken leg and was brought to the facility by ICE. It’s unclear how the man broke his leg, but it is claimed the injury occurred while authorities were attempting to arrest him.

Fuentes spoke to reporters after her brief detainment.

“People deserve to get medical attention and not fear that they’re going to get detained or deported. And so, I arrived at the emergency room, in which the ICE agents were sitting in the room with the individual outside of that room. I asked the ICE agents if they had a judicial warrant for the individual that they were detaining. They refused to answer,” she claimed.

For the record, no law enforcement agent has to give any operation details to uninvolved parties, even a Chicago alderwoman with an attitude.

“We do not have any other background [other than] he was chased by ICE prior to arriving at the hospital, in which he fell (and) broke his leg,” Fuentes continued. “And it’s why ICE agents brought him here. The trauma to his leg is so severe that he’s going to need surgery. The hospital is making current decisions.”
