Anti-ICE shooter ended up killing El Salvadoran illegal alien detained by Trump admin

The mass shooter who authorities say targeted Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents at a Texas facility ended up killing an El Salvadoran illegal migrant instead, the agency said Monday.

Norlan Guzman-Fuentes, 37, died of his wounds after the suspect opened fire on the Dallas, Texas, field office on Wednesday before killing himself, ICE said in a statement. Guzman-Fuentes was among the three ICE detainees wounded by the shooter and had a string of criminal charges spanning more than a decade prior to ICE arresting him Sept. 24, including for violent crimes such as battery and aggravated assault.

The deceased gunman, identified as 29-year-old Joshua Jahn, left behind writings about how he wanted to “give ICE agents real terror,” according to the FBI. He fired “indiscriminately” at the Dallas ICE building, killing Guzman-Fuentes, wounding two other detainees, and hitting no law enforcement officials, authorities have said. Jahn’s brother said he was “not a marksman” in comments to NBC News.

Guzman-Fuentes was first arrested in February 2012 in Florida by police on charges of battery, improper exhibit of a firearm or dangerous weapon, and criminal mischief, though all were dropped except for criminal mischief, ICE said. He pleaded guilty to the remaining charge, court records show.

The mischief charge stemmed from allegations that Guzman-Fuentes came to the home of an individual he had a dispute with, broke windows with rocks, and “threw a large piece of tree trunk” into the house, according to a police affidavit.

Arlington, Texas, police in 2020 charged the migrant with driving while intoxicated, but he was released on bond before ICE could request that the city hold him for apprehension, according to the Monday statement.

About a month before his killing, Dallas police locked up Guzman-Fuentes on aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and an outstanding warrant for driving while intoxicated, ICE said. Local authorities later dismissed the assault charge.

President Donald Trump’s immigration officials found Guzman-Fuentes in jail on the day of his Dallas arrest and moved to apprehend him, according to ICE. He was being taken to the Dallas field office just as Jahn began firing on the facility from a nearby rooftop.

ICE does not know when and where Guzman-Fuentes illegally crossed the U.S. border, the agency said.

At least two million illegal immigrants have been removed from the U.S. since Trump took office, with more than 600,000 deported and others self-deporting after the government began offering incentives, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said Tuesday.

DHS has also reported a drastic increase in assaults on ICE agents under Trump, and multiple arrests were made at leftist protests near ICE facilities in Oregon and Illinois over the weekend, days after the Dallas attack.
