Democratic Michigan Rep. Debbie Dingell said Sunday on MSNBC that Republicans would be responsible if the government shuts down.
Senate Republicans need some Democratic support to clear the 60-vote threshold for any funding bill, and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has been adamant that his party should not support any government funding bill without adding more than $1 trillion in Democratic priorities. Dingell doubled down on “The Weekend” and insisted that the GOP will be to blame if the government shuts down.
“The president has not met with the Democratic leaders since he became president. And it was a very stupid thing to cancel the meeting last Thursday, because if there is a shutdown, it is going to be a Republican shutdown,” Dingell said.
President Donald Trump is expected to meet with the top four congressional leaders at the White House on Monday, just one day before government funding expires on Sept. 30.
Dingell said Democrats must start pushing back against Republican policies she claims have already stripped health care from millions of Americans.

“We have got to start to stand up. The big blank bill, I’ll behave on TV, has ripped health care away from millions of Americans. And when we now talk about the Affordable Care Tax Credit that is going to expire at the end of the year, but the exchange opens November 1st, we’re going to see countless millions of families, again, across this country hurt,” Dingell noted.
Trump canceled a planned meeting with top Democrats on Thursday, saying Republicans should not cave to what he called “unserious and ridiculous demands.”
Senate Democrats mirrored the House by blocking the GOP’s “clean” stopgap bill — with only Sen. John Fetterman breaking ranks — after Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer reaffirmed his opposition to any continuing resolution that excludes Democratic priorities.
In March, Schumer backed the GOP-led spending bill to keep the government open, igniting backlash from fellow Democrats like House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. Schumer defended the move and said that avoiding a shutdown mattered more than protecting his political standing.
