Several U.S. attorneys’ offices received instructions to draft plans for investigating billionaire George Soros’ Open Society Foundations (OSF), The New York Times reported Thursday.
Potential charges include arson, racketeering, wire fraud and material support for terrorism, according to a Monday directive sent by a lawyer in Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche’s office and obtained by the NYT. Soros’ OSF has steered over $80 million to organizations “tied to terrorism or extremist violence” since 2016, according to a Capital Research Center (CRC) report.
A Department of Justice (DOJ) spokesperson told the Daily Caller News Foundation they “do not comment on potential litigation or investigations.”
“The Attorney General is committed to the safety of every American,” the spokesperson said. “If organizations threaten the safety of Americans and violate U.S. law, we will pursue every lawful avenue — investigations and prosecutions to hold them accountable. Terror has no place here.”
U.S attorneys’ offices in California, New York, Washington, D.C., Chicago, Detroit and Maryland received the directive, per the NYT.
George Soros’ son, Alex Soros, took over OSF as chairman in December 2022.
An OSF spokesperson told the DCNF that the accusations are “politically motivated attacks on civil society, meant to silence speech the administration disagrees with and undermine the First Amendment right to free speech.”
The organization has not received any communication or directive related to an investigation, according to the spokesperson.
“When power is abused to take away the rights of some people, it puts the rights of all people at risk,” the spokesperson said. “Our work in the United States is solely dedicated to strengthening democracy and upholding constitutional freedoms. We stand by the work we do to improve lives in the United States and across the world.”
Soros-funded political action committees have backed district attorneys who oversaw surges of crime in liberal cities.
Left-wing groups funded by Soros funded groups that trained activists “in property destruction and sabotage during the 2020 riots,” as well as a group that provided support for the “Stop Cop City” campaign in Atlanta that led to more than 40 prosecutions on domestic terrorism charges, according to CRC’s report.
OSF gave around $23,275,000 to seven organizations that engage in behavior that “meets the FBI’s definition of domestic terrorism,” as well as $50,571,206 to groups that endorsed Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023 attack, per the CRC report.
The U.S. attorney’s office in the Eastern District of Virginia is also reportedly gearing up to indict former FBI Director James Comey in the coming days, several outlets indicated Wednesday.
Following Charlie Kirk’s assassination, Trump told NBC News that Soros is “a bad guy” who “should be put in jail.”
President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social in August that “Soros, and his group of psychopaths, have caused great damage to our Country,” suggesting they should be charged.
“George Soros, and his wonderful Radical Left son, should be charged with RICO because of their support of Violent Protests, and much more, all throughout the United States of America,” he wrote. “We’re not going to allow these lunatics to rip apart America any more, never giving it so much as a chance to ‘BREATHE,’ and be FREE.”
The OSF responded on X that the organization does not “support or fund violent protests.”
