House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said on MSNBC Tuesday that voters believe President Donald Trump has “no interest in making their lives better.”
Trump canceled a planned meeting with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Jeffries on Tuesday, accusing Democrats of making “unserious and ridiculous demands” just eight days before a possible government shutdown. In an interview with “Deadline: White House,” Jeffries accused Republicans of once again “bending the knee” to Trump, saying that they rammed through a bill that proves they have “no interest in making [Americans’] lives better.”
“Legislatively, the Republicans bent the knee to Donald Trump as they always do, and they were able to sneak it through the House and the Senate, but the bill is deeply unpopular because the American people have now come to the conclusion that Donald Trump and Republicans have no interest in making their lives better,” Jeffries said.
Jeffries said that Republicans are actively harming everyday Americans to benefit billionaire donors.
WATCH:
“They are hurting everyday Americans in order to reward their billionaire donors. And so this is an extension of that fight in terms of Democrats aggressively pushing back against Donald Trump’s efforts to continue to gut the health care of the American people and threaten the American people with a painful government shutdown,” Jeffries added.
The One Big Beautiful Bill includes provisions that cut taxes for lower- and middle-income Americans, shielding overtime and tip-based income from taxation and expanding the child tax credit. Polling shows that when Americans learn what’s actually in the bill, most view it favorably. Meanwhile, the legislation also directs new funding to rural hospitals and boosts defense and immigration enforcement budgets, which shows a clear intent to improve Americans’ lives across income levels and regions.
