The U.S. vetoed a United Nations (UN) Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire between Hamas and Israel, calling the move “performative” and sympathetic to Hamas narratives, the Associated Press reported Friday.
All 14 other members of the U.N. Security Council supported the resolution, while the U.S. criticized the move as a “performative action designed to draw a veto,” according to the AP. The U.S. said the resolution did not go far enough in condemning Hamas’ atrocities against Israel, and that the other Security Council members ignored the U.S.’s warnings that the language was unacceptable.
“U.S. opposition to this resolution will come as no surprise,” Morgan Ortagus, a senior U.S. policy adviser, said before the vote according to the AP. “It fails to condemn Hamas or recognize Israel’s right to defend itself, and it wrongly legitimizes the false narratives benefiting Hamas, which have sadly found currency in this council.”
President Donald Trump’s administration has attempted multiple times to broker a ceasefire between Hamas and Israel, but have so far been unsuccessful in recreating the ceasefire from January, which saw most of the hostages freed. Hamas has shot down multiple proposals from the U.S. while Israel has been equally recalcitrant on diplomatic talks, preferring to use military force to get Hamas to capitulate.
Recently, Trump has reportedly grown “frustrated” and angry with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over his decision to strike Hamas officials in Doha, Qatar.
More and more Western nations are moving to recognize a Palestinian state, with France, Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia planning to formally recognize the state during the ongoing general assembly.
