President of major Texas University to resign after backlash over gender ideology

Daily Caller News Foundation

Texas A&M University president Mark Welsh is stepping down after national outrage erupted over a student at the university getting kicked out of class for objecting to a gender ideology lesson.

In a viral video, a student spoke up in class with concerns that the lesson on “gender and sexuality” in a children’s literature class was inappropriate and violated federal directives. Just over a week later, the university announced Welsh’s resignation without stating a reason.

“President Welsh is a man of honor who has led Texas A&M with selfless dedication,” Texas A&M University System Chancellor Glenn Hegar said in the announcement. “We are grateful for his service and contributions. At the same time, we agree that now is the right moment to make a change and to position Texas A&M for continued excellence in the years ahead.”

Welsh will step down at 5pm on Sept. 19.

The professor who taught the gender ideology lesson, who insisted she could not be stopped from “teaching things that are biologically true” and had the “legal and ethical authority” to cover the subject, was fired shortly after the video picked up steam online.

In Welsh’s message to the community following the ordeal, he claimed the issue with the course had already been flagged the previous summer and that the content was supposed to be removed, but administrators at the college allegedly violated the order. Two administrators were also removed from their administrative positions because of the event.

Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott previously threatened to fire the university president for allegedly violating the state’s ban on diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI).

“General Welsh’s legacy of leadership and service is one that the Aggie family will always remember,” Texas A&M University System Board of Regents Chairman Robert Albritton said in the resignation announcement. “The Board of Regents is united in ensuring that this transition strengthens the university’s future and keeps Texas A&M true to its mission and values.”
