President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that he is designating Antifa a terrorist organization and calling for investigations into its financial backers.
Trump formally labeled Antifa a “major terrorist organization” in a post on Truth Social, calling the far-left group a “sick, dangerous, radical left disaster” and urging investigations into its financial backers.
“I am pleased to inform our many U.S.A. Patriots that I am designating ANTIFA, A SICK, DANGEROUS, RADICAL LEFT DISASTER, AS A MAJOR TERRORIST ORGANIZATION. I will also be strongly recommending that those funding ANTIFA be thoroughly investigated in accordance with the highest legal standards and practices,” Trump wrote.
Trump vowed to classify Antifa as a terrorist organization in May 2020 following the George Floyd protests, though no formal designation followed. In January 2021, violent demonstrations linked to Antifa caused widespread damage in cities like Portland, where then-Mayor Ted Wheeler admitted the group had engaged in criminal acts and destruction.
Dozens of Portland businesses—including banks, wine shops, cafes, and jewelry stores—were vandalized or looted during the unrest, racking up millions in losses. Journalist and author Andy Ngo, known for his reporting on Antifa, was brutally beaten in June 2019 while documenting one of the group’s rallies, leaving him hospitalized with serious injuries.
Democratic leaders, including former President Joe Biden, have dismissed concerns about Antifa’s structure, with Biden calling it “an idea” rather than an organization during a 2020 debate. His remark drew criticism from law enforcement officials and commentators, who pointed to Antifa’s violent record and organized presence on the streets.
