Republican Gov. Spencer Cox of Utah said Sunday on CNN that all Americans needed to “look in the mirror” in the aftermath of the assassination of Turning Point USA (TPUSA) founder Charlie Kirk.
Authorities have arrested Tyler Robinson, accusing him of gunning down Kirk during a TPUSA “Prove Me Wrong” event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday, during which he was debating attendees on a variety of topics. Cox called the assassination “a direct assault on America.”
“If your view of America is not shaken right now, then there’s something wrong with you. This is a direct assault on America, a direct assault on every single one of us,” Cox told “State of the Union” host Dana Bash.

“Of course it’s all about Charlie and we love Erika [Kirk] and her kids and his family, but this is us and this is our chance,” Cox continued. “This is our moment. We’ve had periods like this in the past. I mentioned the late 60s and early 70s. But if we’re waiting for a president or a governor to get us off, out of this dark chapter, then it will never happen.”
“Every one of us has to look in the mirror and decide, are we going to try to make it better, or are we going to make it worse?” an emotional Cox told Bash. “And I just, I pray that God will help us find Him again and, and find our souls and find each other again.”
Cox told the Wall Street Journal on Friday that Robinson was “deeply indoctrinated with leftist ideology.”
Kirk founded TPUSA, an organization for conservative college and high school students, in June 2012, according to the group’s website. He also hosted “The Charlie Kirk Show,” a podcast that later became a radio show on the Salem Radio Network, according to his biography on TPUSA’s site.
