A male student suspected of a shooting at Evergreen High School in Evergreen, Colo. died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds on Wednesday, according to multiple reports.

The shooting occurred at around 12:24 p.m. local time on Wednesday on school grounds, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and news coverage. The Sheriff’s office confirmed the death of the suspected shooter in an update posted to X on Wednesday night.

The suspected shooter’s name has not been released, as of this story’s publication. A spokeswoman for the Sheriff’s Office, Jacki Kelley, told reporters on Wednesday that two other students were critically injured in the shooting and taken to the hospital along with the suspected shooter.

A fourth child was also transported to the hospital, but it is currently unclear why, Kelley said on Wednesday, the Colorado Sun reported. One of the students injured in the school shooting was released from the hospital, but another remains in critical condition, 9News reported Thursday morning.

Classes at Evergreen High School were canceled for the rest of this week in the wake of the shooting, the Denver Post reported on Thursday.

“This kind of violence has no place in Colorado, especially our schools where kids should feel safe to learn and grow,” Democratic Colorado Gov. Jared Polis said in a statement posted to X on Wednesday night in response to the shooting.

Polis added that “no family should ever fear for their child’s life.”

“My heart goes out to the victims of the Evergreen shooting and their families as they grapple with this senseless act of violence,” Polis wrote in the social media post. “I, the Evergreen Community, and the entire State of Colorado are devastated by this and will keep the victims, as well as their friends and family, in our thoughts.”

“I will continue to closely monitor this situation and receive updates from local law enforcement and the @CSP_News,” he added.
