The U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. went into lockdown Thursday as law enforcement responded to what officials described as an active threat.

Naval Support Activity Annapolis, which oversees the Academy’s security, confirmed the lockdown to the Daily Caller News Foundation and said the response was being coordinated with local police agencies. A Naval Academy spokesperson told USNI News that the incident prompted an immediate shelter-in-place directive for all students, faculty, and staff.

“Naval Support Activity Annapolis, in coordination with local law enforcement, is currently responding to reports of threats made to the Naval Academy. The base is on lockdown out of an abundance of caution. This is a developing situation and we will provide updates as they become available,” Lt. Naweed Lemar told the Daily Caller News Foundation.

Multiple sources told Fox News that a former midshipman who had been expelled from the academy allegedly returned to campus armed with a gun. Fox News host Bret Baier reported that witnesses said gunshots were heard inside one of the academy buildings, though no casualties had been confirmed. The individual reportedly knocked on doors while impersonating military police.

“We are told from people on the ground there have been gunshots heard inside one of the academy buildings. We don’t have any casualties. We don’t have any other information other than someone was knocking on doors believed to be this angry midshipman, ex midshipman, claiming to be with the military police,” Baier said.

Baier later reported that a victim was seen being transported from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, by medevac with what appeared to be serious, potentially life-threatening injuries. Citing officials on the ground, Baier said multiple victims were being assessed by emergency medical personnel, with at least one confirmed for transport.

From the Naval Academy by medevac with serious potentially life-threatening wounds again, this is U.S. Naval Academy,” Baier reported.

Kortlan Jackson, a spokesperson for the police department, told WVALTV11, that he could not confirm an active threat but added that officials “are searching the area out of an abundance of caution.”
