President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he is weighing deploying federal troops to New Orleans to crack down on crime.
Trump told reporters in the Oval Office that he is trying to decide whether to send the National Guard to New Orleans or Chicago. Trump’s comments come after he announced Tuesday that he would send in the National Guard to help tackle crime in the Windy City.
“We are making a determination now: Do we go to Chicago? Or do we go to a place like New Orleans where we have a great governor, [Republican Louisiana Gov.] Jeff Landry, who wants us to come in and straighten out a very nice section of this country that has become quite – quite tough, quite bad?” Trump said in the Oval Office on Wednesday.
“We’re going to be going to maybe Louisiana, and you have New Orleans, which has a crime problem,” Trump added. “We’ll straighten that out in about two weeks. It’ll take us two weeks, easier than D.C.”
In a Wednesday afternoon X post, Landry posted a video of the president’s comments and said Louisiana “will take President @realDonaldTrump’s help from New Orleans to Shreveport!”
The president announced on Aug. 11 that he was deploying National Guard troops to Washington, D.C. to help stamp out violent crime in the city, drawing criticism from some Democrats. Still, some recent polls have shown that many Americans approve of Trump’s handling of crime.
“I will solve the crime problem fast, just like I did in DC. Chicago will be safe again, and soon,” Trump wrote Tuesday in a Truth Social post. “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
“We have consistently worked with our federal partners, including collaborations with the Louisiana State Police,” Democratic New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell’s office and the New Orleans Police Department said in a joint statement provided to the Daily Caller News Foundation. “This collaborative approach has been instrumental in our ongoing success in reducing crime.”
