‘Try to win f**king elections!’: James Carville blows gasket on DNC over land acknowledgment

Daily Caller News Foundation

Democratic strategist James Carville on “Politics War Room” Thursday expressed outrage at the Democratic National Committee (DNC) for beginning its summer meeting with a land acknowledgement.

The acknowledgment, delivered by Treaurer Lindy Sowmick of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party, was one of the first items on the DNC meeting agenda on Monday and was based on the premise that the Minnesota land they were on was improperly taken from indigenous people. Carville said on his podcast that he agreed with the premise, but argued his party was making a mistake by raising the issue at the meeting.

LISTEN:

“Why are you bringing this up in an election!? … This is an election and the DNC is not the place to discuss this! Understand this: the DNC does not exist to right wrongs,” Carville said. “It doesn’t exist to acknowledge the more unpleasant parts of history. It doesn’t exist to make people feel good. It exists— get this through your head — to win elections! Now, do you think that is going to help us win elections … by arguing about land theft from the Dakotas? We’re not!”

“Please stop this in the name of a just, merciful God! Don’t you see what’s happening? Don’t you see where this has brought us to? For God’s sakes, lady!” he added. “And what is [DNC Chairman] Ken Martin doing there? You don’t have but one job, Ken — it’s to win! … You’re supposed to try to win fucking elections! Before we leave this, in case you’re wondering, Fox was over this like stink on shit. They were all over it, as you could well imagine.”

Former Democratic strategist Dan Turrentine similarly condemned his party on Monday after the first day of the meeting, arguing on “The Ingraham Angle” that it was repeating its past mistakes that led it to its present diminished state.

“Laura, you said it: it’s the definition of insanity: you just keep doing the same thing over and over again. And as a Democrat, it’s maddening that we’re still not serious,” Turrentine told host Laura Ingraham. “You said it: we haven’t lost 4.5 million voters, nor is our brand at a historic low, because we don’t fight hard enough. It’s because we remain completely culturally disconnected and we have absolutely no agenda.”

“[O]n the cultural issues, we literally have think tanks putting memos out that ‘these are the words you’re not supposed to say,’” he added.

Liberal think tank Third Way urged Democrats in a Friday memo to avoid using woke language that it warned could repel voters. It outlined 45 words and phrases it believed Democrats should refrain from using because “no ordinary person would ever dream of” saying them, arguing certain terms make Democrats sound like “extreme, divisive, elitist, and obfuscatory enforcers of wokeness.”

Democrats’ favorability plummeted to a record low of 29%, according to a March CNN poll, while a July Quinnipiac poll found only 19% of voters approved of the party’s Congressional leadership, also marking an all-time low.

Moreover, the party has faced infighting, struggles reaching fundraising goals and steep declines in voter registration.
