DC Mayor Muriel Bowser says she’s grateful for Trump’s assistance with city’s crime problem

Daily Caller News Foundation

Democratic Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser said during a Wednesday press conference that she was grateful for President Donald Trump’s crime crackdown.

Trump announced on Aug. 11 that his administration was declaring a “public safety emergency,” deploying the National Guard and federally taking over the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD). Bowser said “the surge of officers” has helped MPD and particularly honed in on a substantial decrease in carjackings.

“We greatly appreciate the surge of officers that enhance what MPD has been able to do in this city. The most significant thing that we are highlighting today is the area of crime that was most troubling for us in 2023,” Bowser said. “Now, we have driven it down over the last years … But for carjackings, the difference between this period, this 20-day period of this federal surge, and last year represents an 87% reduction in carjackings in Washington, D.C.”

“We know that when carjackings go down, when the use of guns goes down, when homicides or robberies go down, neighborhoods feel safer and are safer,” she continued. “So this surge has been important to us for that reason.”

Robberies also plunged by 42% during the first 14 days of Trump’s crackdown, according to statistics released by the DC Police Union on Monday.

Since the beginning of Trump’s crackdown, 1,170 arrests have been made, including eight gang members, a White House official told the Daily Caller’s Reagan Reese on Wednesday. On Tuesday night, there were 84 arrests, 40 of which were illegal aliens.

A Harvard CAPS/Harris poll published on Monday found that 54% of registered voters backed Trump declaring the crime emergency and deploying the National Guard.

When Trump first announced the federal takeover, Bowser lamented it and called for statehood in the district during a press conference.

Trump on Friday floated the idea on Friday of replacing Bowser if she did not straighten up on crime in the nation’s capital.

“Mayor Bowser better get her act straight or she won’t be mayor [for] very long because we’ll take it over with the federal government and run it like it’s supposed to be run,” Trump said in the Oval Office. “The numbers were horrible, [Washington] was a crime-infested rat hole, and they do have a lot of rats, we’re getting rid of them too. And we’ve made a lot of progress, and it was extremely unsafe, and now it’s extremely safe.”
