Soccer fan in MAGA hat records himself getting booted out of stadium for Trump support

A St. Louis soccer fan was rudely deprived of the pleasure of watching his favorite team when he was kicked out of the stadium over his proudly showing his support for President Donald J. Trump.

Michael Weitzel was enjoying the action at the July 26 St. Louis City SC game at Energizer Park when he was accosted by security who asked him to leave with around 25 minutes left in the match because he was wearing a red “Make America Great Again” baseball cap.

The incident came after someone filed a complaint in the middle of the game. Weitzel’s ouster from the premises was captured on video and posted to social media, where it has since gone viral.

“I’m being asked to leave by police. I am being threatened with arrest. They are asking me to leave,” Weitzel says in the video.

In the video, Weitzel points out fans in the audience who are waving colorful “Pride” flags that also promote a political message, but were told by security that they had been pre-approved, prompting him to ask about whether the rules are being equally applied.

“I am being evicted from the premises because of Donald Trump, because we can’t wear Donald Trump hats in public,” he said. “So now I am being evicted from the premises.”

“Trump is not welcome at St. Louis City SC club,” he added. “Trump is not welcome here.”

The Major League Soccer rules prohibit the wearing of attire with political messages, although it might have been selectively enforced to target a Trump supporter in an act of political retaliation after a complaint from a bitter leftist.

“Displaying signs, symbols, images, using language or making gestures that are threatening, abusive, or discriminatory, including on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, gender, gender identity, ability, and/or sexual orientation,” the league’s website states. “Displaying signs, symbols, or images for commercial purposes or for electioneering, campaigning, or advocating for or against any candidate, political party, legislative issue, or government action.”

“This was last Saturday night at the game, you know, basically walking into the stadium, didn’t hear anything from anybody,” Weitzel said during an appearance on KFTK’s Marc Cox Morning Show. “Didn’t realize there was any problem with my attire on the way out the door. You know, I have unfortunately only one red hat, and that is a Make America Great Again hat.”

“I didn’t think there’d be any issue with wearing that to the game, but with about 25 minutes left in the game, I was basically told they’d received a complaint about my hat,” he added.

Weitzel told Cox and co-host Kim St. Onge that he was being flipped off by some fans as he made his way to his seat and that others jeered him when he went to get something to drink.

“I just kind of laughed at it,” he said. “I thought, wow, these, these people have, uh, really let the political discourse get to them. You know?”

“I didn’t have words with anybody. I didn’t get into any fights. I just tried to mind my own business and watch a soccer game,” said Weitzel, explaining that the hat triggered someone enough to file a complaint by email.

“Someone had taken the time to write a strongly worded email to management, letting them know how offensive and dangerous my speech was. And, you know, I think there was a little bit of confusion at first with what the problem actually was, but they quickly identified the hat and quickly sent some police officers to escort me out,” he said, adding that one member of security told him that he was a Trump supporter himself.

X users expressed outrage at his being booted from the venue over wearing a MAGA hat.

Weitzel told KFTK that he isn’t going to let the haters deter him from going to future games, although he’s less enthusiastic about paying for three years of game tickets now.

“I do want to see them do well,” Weitzel said. “I don’t really want to let the actions of a few small-minded people or a few angry complainers stop me from enjoying something that I love.”
