Biden calls Ketanji Brown Jackson ‘one of the brightest lawyers I’ve ever met’

Daily Caller News Foundation

Former President Joe Biden said Thursday that Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson is one of the brightest lawyers he’s ever met.

Biden addressed the National Bar Association gala in Chicago, as he reflected on his time in office. Biden said he was committed to diversifying the judicial system and appointed the “most demographically diverse slate of judges in the history of the United States.”

“I appointed the most demographically diverse slate of judges ever in the history of the United States of America. [At the] top of that list, one of the brightest lawyers I’ve ever met, Ketanji Brown Jackson, the first black woman on the United States Supreme Court,” Biden said.

Jackson was the only justice to dissent in a ruling allowing President Donald Trump to proceed with plans to reduce the federal workforce, calling the majority’s decision “hubristic and senseless.” Her growing criticism of the high court emerged in her dissent in Trump v. CASA, where she said that the decision limiting district courts’ use of nationwide injunctions posed an “existential threat to the rule of law.”

During his speech, Biden also boasted about his long political career.

“And when I got elected as the youngest person, I got elected before I could be sworn in. Everybody, and I beat a really very popular guy. Nixon won my state with 60% of the vote. I won by a rousing 3,200 votes. And they’d say, what’s your secret? What was the secret? There always had to be some secret. And I always told them the same thing, and I mean from the bottom of my heart,” Biden said.

Biden’s claim that he knows “what’s worth losing an election over” contradicts his record of political flip-flops and strategic reversals. For instance, while he championed the 1994 crime bill, which contributed to mass incarceration, he later said it was a mistake after facing backlash from the left.

Similarly, Biden reversed his position on the Hyde Amendment, which prohibited federal funding for abortion, shifting his stance during the 2020 campaign to align with Democratic voters’ demands. Furthermore, his 2021 ban on oil drilling on federal lands was followed by approval for drilling in Alaska. In 2024, the Biden administration moved to block oil and gas activity on millions of acres of Alaskan land and effectively rejected a road project vital for mining copper reserves.
