Zuckerberg details his plan for a personal ‘superintelligence’ for every single person

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Wednesday detailed his vision of creating a personal “superintelligence” for every single person.

In his first video address since he launched the Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL) in June to develop artificial intelligence technology, Zuckerberg spoke of the emergence of a “superintelligence” and of how he intends to use this technology to help people help themselves.

“AI keeps accelerating, and over the past few months, we’ve begun to see glimpses of AI systems improving themselves, so developing superintelligence is now in sight,” he began. “But there’s this big open question about what we should direct superintelligence towards.”

“A lot has been written about the scientific and economic advances that AI can bring … but I think an even more meaningful impact in our lives is going to come from everyone having a personal superintelligence that helps you achieve your goals, create what you want to see in the world, be a better friend, and grow to become the person that you aspire to be,” he added.

Zuckerberg went on to describe how his vision for the future differs from those of his competitors.

“This vision is different from others in the industry who want to direct AI at automating all of the valuable work,” he said. “At Meta, we believe in putting the power of superintelligence in people’s hands to direct it towards what they value in their own lives.”

“Some of this will be about improving productivity, but a lot of it may be more personal in nature. This is going to be a new era in some ways, but in others it’s going to be a continuation of historical trends,” he added.

As an example of what he meant, the Meta boss noted that just a few hundred years ago, the majority of people farmed for survival. Whereas today, less than two percent of people produce food.

“Advances in technology have freed much of humanity to focus less on subsistence, and more on the pursuits that we choose,” he explained.

“At each step along the way, most people have decided to use their newfound productivity to spend more time on creativity, culture, and just enjoying life – and I expect superintelligence to accelerate this trend even more,” he continued.

Zuckerberg concluded his monologue by again stressing the personal aspect of AI.

“I believe deeply in building personal superintelligence for everyone, and at Meta, we have the resources to build the resources to build the massive infrastructure required, and the ability to deliver new technology to billions of people,” he said. “I am excited to build this future, and we’ve got a lot more to come soon.”

He had every reason to be excited because new financial data shows that Meta blew past its second-quarter expectations.

“Meta reported $47.5 billion in revenue and $7.14 earnings per share through Q2, accounting for an annual increase of 22% and 38%, respectively,” according to Forbes. “Those figures smashed Wall Street’s forecasts of $44.8 billion and $5.88 EPS, or year-over-year growth of 11% and 12.7%, respectively.”

Meta also hit 3.48 billion daily users.

The only thing holding Meta and Zuckerberg back is top AI researchers who have thus far refused to come work for them.

“Many top AI researchers have said no to Meta offers, as many of their salaries are already so large that they could retire, meaning it’s only possible to attract or retain them with a broad mission they believe in, or alignment with their ethics or goals for AI advancement,” The Verge notes.
