Conservative maverick rep throws hat in ring for wide open gov race

Republican South Carolina Rep. Ralph Norman, a prominent member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, is set to announce that he is stepping into his state’s 2026 gubernatorial race on Friday.

Norman has already launched his campaign website, writing that while it has been an “honor” for him to serve in Congress, “the time is now to return to my home state where I was born and raised to protect the fabric of our state.” Norman added that he believes Americans “need a businessman” to serve as South Carolina’s next governor.

“I do not view politics as a career,” Norman wrote in a statement posted to his campaign website. “I am a businessman who went into politics to make a difference for ‘We the People.’ America has a businessman in the White House, and I believe we need a businessman as Governor of South Carolina.”

“I have a vision for South Carolina – one where we fix our roads, improve our schools, and get South Carolina prepared for a tremendous opportunity,” Norman wrote further. “But that won’t happen if we don’t fix a system that is rotten to its core. I am running for Governor to shake things up, clean up Columbia, and knock down the corrupt political establishment once and for all.”

Norman is expected to file his official candidacy paperwork sometime on Friday, his campaign confirmed to the Associated Press. He is also set to host an event featuring a “special announcement” in Rock Hill, South Carolina on Sunday.

Norman, who is considered one of the most conservative members of the House and a leading fiscal hawk, has represented South Carolina’s 5th congressional district since 2017.

The South Carolina Republican on July 15 was the sole House Republican on the House Rules Committee to vote in favor of a Democratic-backed amendment that would force the Department of Justice to release any documents regarding the prosecution and incarceration of deceased sex criminal Jeffrey Epstein.

Norman was also a leading advocate for making President Donald Trump’s “big, beautiful” bill more fiscally conservative. He voted against advancing the bill in the House Budget Committee on May 16, along with three other Freedom Caucus members, citing insufficient reforms to green energy tax credits and Medicaid. Norman however voted for Trump’s signature legislation — which the president signed into law July 4 — on both May 22 and July 3.

Norman also notably endorsed former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley, who served as South Carolina’s governor from 2011 to 2017, in the 2024 Republican presidential primary. He endorsed Trump after Haley dropped out of the race.

The race to succeed term-limited incumbent Republican South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster, is likely to result in a crowded primary. Other GOP candidates running in the state’s gubernatorial race include Republican South Carolina Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette, Republican South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson and Spartanburg State Sen. Josh Kimbrell.

Republican South Carolina Rep. Nancy Mace is rumored to be weighing running for the South Carolina governorship in 2026. Mace wrote in a post to X on Friday that she wishes Norman “the best of luck today as he announces his run for Governor.”

Norman’s campaign did not immediately respond to the DCNF’s request for comment.
