Gregg Jarrett explains why Obama should be ‘thanking’ Trump

Daily Caller News Foundation

Fox News legal analyst Gregg Jarrett said Wednesday on the network’s “Hannity” show that former President Barack Obama should be “thanking” President Donald Trump for bringing presidential immunity to the Supreme Court.

Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard announced Wednesday that she is referring Obama to the Department of Justice for criminal charges, following the release of new files involving the 2016 Russia hoax. Host Sean Hannity asked Jarrett about a potential “statute of limitations.”

“But if it’s a grand conspiracy investigation, Greg Jarrett, the statute of limitations won’t be applicable?” Hannity asked.

“No, if the ongoing conspiracy is, for example, the raid on Mar-a-Lago and events thereafter, that’s when the statute of limitations begins to count right there. So that’s not an obstacle. But, you know, Barack Obama should be thanking Donald Trump,” Jarrett said. “Why? Because he obtained from the U.S. Supreme Court the very kind of immunity that will protect Barack Obama.”

In July 2024, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Trump’s immunity appeal, finding that presidents hold presidential immunity from criminal prosecution for “official acts” taken within office.

Gabbard announced the declassification of documents involving the 2016 allegations against Trump’s first campaign. According to those allegations, Trump colluded with Russia to sway the election in his favor. Obama administration officials allegedly pushed the allegations, using the infamous Steele dossier as a roadmap.

Gabbard, in her memo Friday, said Obama’s DNI James Clapper and the Department of Homeland Security allegedly withheld an FBI and NSA press release issued weeks before the 2016 election saying they had “low confidence” in Russia’s role in the data leaks. The memo also alleged deep state intelligence officials had begun leaking “blatantly false intelligence to The Washington Post” following the 2016 election.

Gabbard said she would refer Obama to the DOJ. Obama spokesman Patrick Rodenbush called the allegations “ridiculous.”

“Nothing in the document issued last week undercuts the widely accepted conclusion that Russia worked to influence the 2016 presidential election but did not successfully manipulate any votes,” Rodenbush wrote. “These findings were affirmed in a 2020 report by the bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee, led by then-Chairman Marco Rubio.”
