Republican strategist Scott Jennings corrected left-wing SiriusXM talk show host John Fugelsang about the situation on the U.S.-Mexico border Thursday after Fugelsang claimed the Trump administration hadn’t shut down the border.
The Border Patrol encountered fewer than 9,000 illegal immigrants in February, March, April and May, according to figures released by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), figures down over 90% from those months in 2024. Fugelsang complained the Trump administration wasn’t pursuing employers as part of their immigration enforcement strategy.
“If they wanted the border crossings to stop, they would go after the employers. There‘s a gigantic ‘help wanted’ sign at our border, and the Republican Party will never take that ‘help wanted’ sign down,” Fugelsang claimed.

“The border crossings have stopped. They have stopped,” Jennings responded, with Fugelsang cutting in by saying, “They will never —”
“Literally almost zero,” Jennings said.
Upon taking office on Jan. 20, President Donald Trump issued several executive orders to address illegal immigration and border security, including designating Mexican drug cartels, the Venezuelan prison gang TdA and the El Salvadoran prison gang MS-13 as foreign terrorist organizations.
“But they’re not going after the employers. The white guy —” Fugelsang claimed before Jennings cut in with, “You said, if they wanted them to stop. They have stopped, already have stopped, have they not?”
The Border Patrol reported only 137 apprehensions on June 28, the lowest single-day total in 25 years, according to a July 2 release from the Department of Homeland Security.
“No, they have not. And they will continue to come. Donald Trump will — they come here because white people —” Fugelsang insisted, before Jennings responded, “Okay, stop.”
“May I? They come here because white folks like Donald Trump hire them to avoid paying a living wage to an American worker —” Fugelsang claimed before Jennings said, “The border is effectively shut down.”
