President Donald Trump warned on Tuesday that Democratic New York City mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani will be placed under arrest if he interferes with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations.
As the administration cracks down on illegal immigration, Mamdani threatened to use his power to “stop masked ICE agents from deporting our neighbors” during his acceptance speech on June 25. Trump said that the administration will not hesitate to arrest Mamdani if he were to violate immigration law.
“Well then, we’ll have to arrest [Mamdani],” Trump said. “Look, we don’t need a communist in this country, but if we have one, I’m gonna be watching over him very carefully on behalf of the nation. We send him money, we send him all the things that he needs to run a government.”
WATCH:
The administration has threatened to prosecute government officials who defy ICE agents’ operations, particularly in sanctuary states and cities. Border czar Tom Homan warned that any government official who obstructs federal agents’ duties could be subject to prosecution, prompting Democrat California Gov. Gavin Newsom, J.B. Pritzker of Illinois, and Kathy Hochul of New York to dare him to place them under arrest.
Democrat New York City Mayor Eric Adams has cooperated with the administration and ICE to arrest and deport illegal immigrants who had entered the city. While illegal immigration faced a massive surge under former President Joe Biden’s administration, Adams warned in September 2023 that illegal immigration would “destroy” the city and criticized the Biden administration for offering him no support.
Mamdani’s victory in the Democratic primary has sounded the alarm among conservatives, particularly given that he is a self-described Democratic Socialist. He has called for implementing rent freezes, providing government-run programs such as grocery stores and buses, and raising the minimum wage to $30.
The Ugandan-born socialist has come under fire for refusing to condemn the phrase, “globalize the intifada,” which many Jewish people and advocates interpret as a call for “indiscriminate violence against Israel and potentially against Jews and Jewish institutions worldwide,” according to the ADL.
Republican Tennessee Rep. Andy Ogles requested that the Department of Justice (DOJ) investigate whether Mamdani should be subject to denaturalization hearings for appearing to express support toward The Holy Land Foundation, who were convicted of providing “material support” to Hamas in 2008. The congressman pointed to Mamdani rapping the lyric, “Free the Holy Land Five/My guys,” as evidence of his support for the terrorist-related crime.
