President Donald Trump is reportedly weighing federal funding cuts to hospitals that provide sex change treatments to minors in spite of the administration’s orders.
Mehmet Oz, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) administrator, gave nine children’s hospitals a 30-day deadline beginning May 28 to confirm they are not providing sex changes to children. With several hospitals now failing to provide data in response, CMS is considering revoking federal funding for noncompliance, the Wall Street Journal reported.
“President Trump has been clear: America will protect kids from life-altering and experimental procedures,” Oz said, according to WSJ. “CMS has warned hospitals and state Medicaid programs about these dangers—and is taking regulatory enforcement actions.”
CMS did not respond to requests for comment from the Daily Caller News Foundation.
CMS is reportedly reviewing its authority to disqualify hospitals from Medicaid entirely if they continue providing sex change operations for children, officials told WSJ. Many of the hospitals are reliant on federal funding to function.
The Trump administration has already successfully pressured some youth gender clinics into closing, including one of the largest in the nation, the Center for Transyouth Health and Development at the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. The UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh also apparently stated it would no longer offer puberty blockers following CMS’s letter, according to WSJ.
Meanwhile, the Boston Children’s Hospital has found itself at a crossroads with the Trump administration, with Massachusetts state law requiring it to provide sex change treatments, including for minors.
Trump has made it his mission to eliminate child sex changes, signing an executive order in January that eliminated all federal funding towards the procedures. Attorney General Pam Bondi doubled down on the effort in April, directing prosecutors to investigate doctors who perform sex change surgeries on minors.
