Independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders is working closely with groups to help train young leftist candidates to run for office as the 2026 midterms approach, Politico reported Thursday.
Sanders, who caucuses with Senate Democrats, is partnering with Run for Something — a left-wing political organization that recruits young candidates to run for office — and other organizations to provide support and resources to potential candidates, Politico first reported. Thus far, over 5,000 people have signed up to explore seeking office through Sanders’ efforts, the Vermont Senator’s team told the outlet.
“We want to make sure that we’re not just going into these spaces and holding rallies and disappearing, and we’re not just asking people to run for office,” Jeremy Slevin, a top Sanders adviser, told Politico. “We’re giving them the tools they need to actually do it.”
Slevin told Politico that the organizations will attempt to support candidates by providing “resources and trainings of how to file, how to hire a staff, how to set fundraising deadlines and comms goals — basically, how to run a campaign.”
Run for Something refers to itself as “a safety net for new and exciting progressive leaders — at all stages of their journey — helping them run efficient, strategic, grassroots, driven campaigns while feeling supported throughout the process.”
During his time in the Senate, Sanders has long called for more Democrats and independents to run for office.
In February, Sanders set off on a nationwide tour, titled “Fighting Oligarchy,” speaking to sizable crowds about how to “take on the Oligarchs and corporate interests who have so much power and influence in this country.”
Sanders’ office and Run for Something did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
