‘Trump smacked that thing to bits’: Gutfield says president exposed trick Democrats use to exploit people

Daily Caller News Foundation

Fox News’ Greg Gutfeld said Tuesday that President Donald Trump’s win made voters realize how the Democratic Party has used virtue signaling to “exploit people.”

During former Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign, Democrats faced backlash for their attempts to appease specific voters, eventually losing key voting blocs to Republicans after the election. While discussing whether Democrats could gain ground in the 2026 midterm elections on “The Five,” Gutfeld said that, regardless of whether they win seats, the real question is whether voters “believe anything” Democrats say.

“Usually, the outside party does. It’s a question of whether anybody’s going to believe anything you say, because everything you said the last four years was a lie. Not you. I’m just talking about primarily Joe Biden,” Gutfeld said, referring to co-host and Democrat strategist Jessica Tarlov.

“Look, what is the usual answer, Jesse, when someone says, ‘Why don’t they like me?’ Usually, the answer is, ‘Well, you’re a selfish prick.’ And the answer is, ‘I’m not selfish. I do all sorts of things. I help people.’ It’s like, no, no, no. That’s exactly my point. You do those things as a virtue signal to give you permission to exploit people,” Gutfeld added. “People are suddenly realizing that’s what the Democratic Party was.”

In attempts to appeal to males, Harris’s campaign released a 90-second video showing a group of men repeatedly declaring they were “man enough” to support women’s rights and not be “afraid of women.” Additionally, the former vice president rolled out a proposal called the “Opportunity Agenda for Black Men,” which offered one million $20,000 loans to black entrepreneurs and “others who have historically faced barriers to starting a new business or growing an existing business.”

“All the virtues that they expressed were designed for their primary engine, which is the self. How can I elevate my status? How could I end up at the Met Gala? It’s all about that. I mentioned this word before,” Gutfeld said. “It’s an orientation problem. The Democratic Party is a party that doesn’t look up or out. It looks around, and it looks inward. They look around to see what others have,e and that status seeking, and it drives envy. Identity politics plays into that. They look inward.”

“Again, they see everything through the hierarchy of identity. Then suddenly everything becomes transactional. What do I get out of this? Why do they get this? Trump smashed that thing to bits,” Gutfeld said. “But it is kind of incredible to see that change. Especially the younger people. The younger people. It’s all because they’ve lost the sunk cost of identity, that this bag of rocks that they carry around wherever they go, they’re free to bond over ideas. And I would say to the Democrats, you’ve got to take a page out of the Republican playbook.”

Despite the party’s attempts throughout the 2024 campaign, Trump ended up gaining ground among black and Latino men. According to Reuters, the president gained 14 points among Hispanics nationally since 2020, and saw gains among black men in swing states like North Carolina.

Since the election, Democrats have struggled to regain momentum behind a single party leader and message, dropping to a record low of 29% in their favorability, according to a CNN/SSRS poll released in March.
