India reportedly launched attacks on nine Pakistani targets in disputed territories and other regions, Reuters reported Tuesday.
The attack, titled “Operation Sindoor,” targeted nine sites in Pakistan and the disputed Jammu and Kashmir regions under partial Pakistani control, according to Reuters. The attacks come after a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, left at least two dozen dead in the Indian-controlled section of the disputed region.
India accused Pakistan of supporting the militants responsible for the attacks, although no group has so far claimed responsibility, according to the BBC. Pakistan has denied any responsibility for the attack.
No Pakistani military facilities have been targeted, with India saying the strikes targeted “terrorist infrastructure,” according to Reuters. The Pakistani Armed Forces told Pakistani news agency Geo News that a “strong and decisive” response is underway, including both air and ground elements.
The contested area of Kashmir is claimed in part by Pakistan, India, and China to a smaller extent, according to CNN. Both Pakistan and India have maintained their claim to the entire region, which has been a source of tension since the 1947 partition of India under the British Raj.
As of January, there are 342 nuclear weapons between the two nations, with India having 172 and Pakistan holding 170, according to the Arms Control Association.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has attempted to foster peace between the two nations in the wake of the terrorist attack, expressing condolences in a call with Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and pledging cooperation with Indian authorities to fight terrorism.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs and Pakistani Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
