Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer refused to admit Tuesday that President Donald Trump has successfully cracked down on illegal border crossings, despite ample data showing his administration has.
Since Trump returned to power, daily border encounters have fallen 93%, migrant crossings are down by 99.99%, and “gotaways” have dropped by 95%, according to a 100-day fact sheet the White House shared Monday. Schumer brushed off these positive numbers after having spent four years defending former President Joe Biden as border encounters soared to record highs.
“I’ll say one thing to you. I don’t trust Trump’s numbers,” Schumer told a reporter.
WATCH:
During the Biden era, the average number of monthly border encounters reached about 160,000 per day, while the daily average peaked at 15,000 encounters, according to the fact sheet. The total number of border encounters added up to about 11 million throughout Biden’s four years in office.
In contrast, border officials encountered fewer than 7,200 illegal immigrants, the lowest number of encounters ever recorded in a single month, according to the fact sheet. The lowest daily number of encounters occurred in February, which added up to 220 per day.
Arrests and deportations have skyrocketed during Trump’s second term in comparison to the Biden administration. The previous administration made 113,000 administrative arrests in the 2024 fiscal year, while the Trump administration made over 151,000 arrests in the first 100 days of his return to the White House.
Border czar Tom Homan said during a Monday press briefing that the administration has deported over 139,000 illegal immigrants since Jan. 20, which he said are “good” numbers.
Democrats argued that Biden had little power to fix the border crisis and shifted blame toward then-Republican candidate Trump for opposing the bipartisan border deal, a multi-billion-dollar package that aimed to reduce border crossings by imposing stricter immigration and asylum laws.
Schumer did not rule out impeaching Trump if Democrats regain power after the 2026 midterm elections during a Sunday interview with CNN’s Dana Bash, claiming that the president is “violating the rule of law” on a daily basis.
