Democrat Georgia Sen. Jon Ossoff said Friday that President Donald Trump has committed several offenses that would justify impeaching him from office.
A woman at a townhall demanded that Democrats, including Ossoff, are obligated to impeach and remove Trump from office. The senator said he agrees with the woman, stating that Trump’s conduct has “exceeded any prior standard for impeachment.”
“There is no doubt that this president’s conduct has already exceeded any prior standard for impeachment by the United States House of Representatives,” Ossoff said. “I saw just 48 hours ago, he is granting audiences to people who buy his meme coin. So it is in our corrupt political system, it is a standard practice, tragically, for elected officials to grant audiences and time to people in exchange for campaign contributions. He is granting audience to people who purchase the meme coin that directly enriches him. So, where is everybody who was so furious about Hunter Biden’s paintings, which by the way, I do not defend … There is no question that that rises to the level of an impeachable offense.”
WATCH:
Ossoff further accused Trump of defying a federal court order put in place by U.S. District Judge James Boasberg, who ordered that a plane transporting over 200 members of Tren de Agua be returned to the U.S. under the Alien Enemies Act. The White House has repeatedly asserted that they did not defy the order since the planes were already outside of U.S. territory by the time the judge made the ruling.
The senator said that he is working everyday to win a Democratic majority in the House of Representatives so his party can impeach Trump again.
Ossoff is up for reelection in Georgia’s Senate race during the 2026 midterms, which Republicans see as one of their best opportunities to expand their majority in the chamber. Republican Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp is currently seen as a possible contender to run against Ossoff in the midterm race, which could threaten Ossoff’s chances of reelection given his popularity in the state.
Democrat Texas Rep. Al Green filed three articles of impeachment against Trump, and recently told protesters in early April that he will bring articles of impeachment against the president in the next 30 days. He has repeatedly said that Trump does not deserve to continue holding office, even though he became the first Republican president in 20 years to win the popular vote.
House Democrats, at the direction of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, filed the first articles of impeachment against Trump on Dec. 18, 2019, in connection to a phone call where Trump asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to announce two investigations into then-former Vice President Joe Biden’s family ahead of the 2020 election. The president was impeached a second time in January 2021 in the aftermath of the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot.
The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) said that Ossoff is attempting to “overturn the will of Georgia voters” who elected Trump in November 2024. “Jon Ossoff said he’s working every single day to overturn the will of Georgia voters who just elected President Trump,” Nick Puglia, the NRSC regional press secretary, said. “It’s disgusting and Georgians deserve better than a liberal resistance darling who sides with illegal immigrants and men who want to infiltrate women’s sports.”
