Republican strategist Shermichael Singleton appeared eager Tuesday for Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York to emerge as a leader of the Democratic party.
Ocasio-Cortez and independent Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont have been on an “anti-oligarchy” tour targeting President Donald Trump and White House senior advisor Elon Musk. Singleton said that Ocasio-Cortez, who is the best-known of a group of left-wing members of the House of Representatives known as “The Squad,” “appears to be the future” of the Democratic Party, which Democratic strategist Julie Roginsky did not dispute.

“From our vantage point, as Republicans, we would love that, because I think most American voters, especially those who self-identify as independents, are probably to the center of the left or to the center of the right,” Singleton said. “They’re not extremist progressives. And so if the Democratic Party wants to go down that path, I think it’s going to bode well for Republicans in terms of our electoral success.”
Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York came under fire from left-wing media figures and Democrats in Congress over his decision to help pass a GOP-backed spending bill to prevent a government shutdown in March, with Ocasio-Cortez leading him by 19 points when a potential primary race in 2028 was polled by a left-leaning Democratic outlet.
Democratic National Committee Vice Chairman David Hogg reportedly is working with an outside political action committee to oust incumbent Democrats whom he views as too old or moderate, the New York Times reported.
Democrats’ favorability has plummeted to 29%, according to a CNN poll released in March.
