Ret. Lt. Gen. Dan “Raizin’” Caine was confirmed to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff by the Senate early Friday morning.
The vote was 60-25 with Caine set to ascend to the highest ranking military office in the United States, serving as one of the president’s chief advisers on military matters. Caine replaces Air Force General Charles Brown in the position after the Trump administration dismissed the former chairman in February, in part due to his association with left-wing politics.
Fifteen Democrats and independent Sen. Angus King joined 44 Republicans in confirming Caine, with 15 senators not voting. No Republicans opposed the nomination.
Caine began his military career after training in the Air National Guard, deploying to Iraq in 2001 and 2003. He also served as policy director for Counterterrorism and Strategy under former President George W. Bush.
Trump met Caine in Iraq in 2018, when he served as the commanding general of the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) Special Operations Component. Caine reportedly told Trump that he could wipe out ISIS in a week if Trump gave him the proper means.
During Trump’s first term, Trump said in his announcement on Truth Social that Caine was a “warfighter” who was “instrumental in the complete annihilation of the ISIS caliphate,” in Iraq.
Caine was seen as an unconventional candidate for the position, a sentiment the Lieutenant General agreed with during his confirmation hearing in the Senate Apr. 1. Caine, a retired three-star general, will occupy a position normally reserved for active-duty four-star generals.
“I acknowledge I am an unconventional nominee. These are unconventional times,” Caine said during the hearing.
