Is Chuck Schumer the ‘real father’ of DOGE? Roll tape!

In an astonishing breakthrough, Sen. Chuck Schumer has gotten on board with DOGE, declaring that “the number one reason” illegal immigrants come to the United States is so they can defraud programs like Social Security and insisting it must end.

Well, not exactly.

Schumer did say as much, but that was in 1996 — long before the more militant progressive wing began shaping the Democratic Party. Unfortunately for the Senate Minority Leader, footage of his remarks has surfaced and prompted DOGE captain Elon Musk to reply, “This is pure gold. The 1996 model Schumer is right!”

“This is an anti-fraud amendment,” Schumer said in the clip, speaking from the floor of the Senate about adding additional security features to the Social Security card.

“All over where we go, people say, why can’t you stop illegal immigrants or others from coming here? And the number one answer we give our constituents is when they come here, they can get jobs, get benefits against the law because of fraud,” he said at the time.

“If you believe you want to stop fraud in immigration, you have no choice but to support this amendment.”

Fox News host Laura Ingraham responded to the old footage to suggest that Schumer may be “the real father of DOGE.”

Ingraham posted on X: “1996: @SenSchumer sounds exactly like @ElonMusk. Talking fraud, border security, and illegal immigration… Makes you wonder: is Chuck the real father of @DOGE?”

Here’s a quick sampling of other responses to the story, as seen on X:
