Democratic Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar is reportedly planning to file impeachment articles against three top defense officials involved in the recent Signal chat leaks, Axios reported Thursday.
Omar plans to target Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, National Security Advisor Michael Waltz and Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director John Ratcliffe, according to Axios. The scandal involved Waltz’s accidental addition of The Atlantic Editor-in-Chief Jeffery Goldberg to a group chat discussing detailed attack plans against Houthi rebels in Yemen, which Goldberg initially published Monday.
The progressive congresswoman has been pushing this idea to her Democratic colleagues in the House, a senior House Democrat and another source familiar with the matter told Axios.
Omar is a member of the left-wing progressive group known as “the squad,” which includes Democratic Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Cori Bush of Missouri.
President Donald Trump’s administration, including Hegseth and Waltz, officially deny that any “war plans” were discussed in the chat, which prompted Goldberg to release the full logs in a second piece Wednesday which revealed how Hegseth laid out dates and times for certain future actions against the Houthis, which Goldberg said came to fruition.
“Thanks to the strong and decisive leadership of President Trump, and everyone in the group, the Houthi strikes were successful and effective, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Tuesday in an X post. “Terrorists were killed and that’s what matters most to President Trump.”
Waltz denied ever having met Goldberg in a Fox news interview Tuesday, saying Elon Musk provided the “best technical minds” to get to the bottom of how Goldberg was added.
Ratcliffe, in a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing Tuesday, said Signal use was permitted for internal discussions and that the application came “loaded” on his computer at the CIA.
Omar’s office did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
