Republican Texas Sen. Ted Cruz called out Democrats on Newsmax Tuesday for their silence on President Donald Trump’s efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
During a marathon phone call, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump agreed to initiate a peace process with an incremental and temporary ceasefire in the overseas conflict. Cruz discussed the moment at President Trump’s State of the Union address where the response from Democratic lawmakers on ending the war was notably muted.
“When he said ‘We are gonna end this war. We’re gonna move to peace,’ the Democrats were silent and stone-faced. They would not applaud for peace. They didn’t applaud for anything,” Cruz said. “They didn’t applaud for a 13-year-old kid who’s fighting to defeat brain cancer.”
During Trump’s speech to a joint session of Congress, Democrats remained seated when Trump honored D.J. Daniel, a boy with cancer who has been sworn in by over 900 police departments and named an honorary Secret Service agent.

Cruz then recounted an instance where, even amidst calls for ending hostilities, Democrats seemed to align more with positions that support ongoing military involvement rather than initiatives for peace. This stance, according to Cruz, was evident when they chose not to applaud the president’s peace overtures.
“The one thing the Democrats applauded for is he said ‘We’ve sent hundreds of billions of dollars to Ukraine.’ And the Democrats all applauded like crazy. When he said ‘We’re going to end the war and bring peace,’ they stopped applauding,’” Cruz added. “He called Elizabeth Warren ‘Pocahontas’ as she sat there applauding, yes forever war! Forever war! It is really a bizarre situation where the Democrats have decided peace is now [something] they’re opposed to.”
President Trump announced the discontinuation of peace talks on Truth Social in February following a heated argument in the Oval Office with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, which led to the cancellation of a scheduled press conference and Zelenskyy’s eviction from the White House, an official reported.
