Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich appeared on Fox Business Friday and said that the latest actions by the GOP signal a significant conservative shift in American politics.
The House passed legislation Tuesday to fund government operations until the end of September and, despite earlier opposition, Senate Democratic Minority Leader Chuck Schumer announced on the Senate floor Thursday that he would support the GOP’s Trump-backed continuing resolution. Gingrich said Senate Majority Leader John Thune, House Speaker Mike Johnson and President Donald Trump practiced effective teamwork.
“The new majority leader, John Thune, has worked very closely with Speaker Johnson and President Trump. And it was the team of the three of them that just got this particular continuing resolution through,” Gingrich said.

Gingrich said that this shift is noteworthy given the historical challenges Trump faced in aligning with both the Senate and the House during his first term.
“The Democrats had no impact on it. It’s the most clearly Republican resolution, certainly in the last 20 years. And I think the fact that John Thune was able to work as part of a team, it really says a lot because you’re right. In President Trump’s first term, he had a much difficult relationship with the Senate and the House, for that matter,” Gingrich said. “A team being formed in a way that’s very encouraging.”
The government is on track for a partial shutdown after midnight Friday, and it is anticipated that a sufficient number of Senate Democrats will support Schumer in moving forward with the GOP spending bill, thus preventing a government shutdown.
