“The View” co-hosts seethed Wednesday over Republican Texas Rep. Keith Self introducing Democrat Delaware Rep. Sarah McBride, a trans-identifying male, as “mister.”
Democrat Massachusetts Rep. Bill Keating lashed out at Self for using a pronoun aligning with McBride’s biological sex, prompting the Republican congressman to adjourn the hearing held by the Europe Subcommittee on House Foreign Affairs. The co-hosts raged at Republicans for allegedly using transgender people as a “scapegoat” for simply recognizing biology.
“This is the new scapegoat is transgender people, it seems. And they always have to have somebody to blame and to focus on so you don’t watch them steal your money and Social Security and your Medicaid and your taxes while they give big tax breaks to billionaires,” co-host Joy Behar said. “It’s a way of distracting American people from the real issues.”
“And by the way, this was a hearing on arms control and international security and U.S. assistance to Europe, like, actual issues that matter,” co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin added. “And I’m sorry, I come from the more libertarian side of the Republican Party, live and let live. She ran as Sarah McBride, she was elected by the voters as Sarah McBride, and listen, I think people of good faith can have different opinions on policy around trans issues, I do not think there is any way you can treat somebody without dignity and respect and how they want to be viewed.”

Co-host Sara Haines said Self referring to McBride as “mister” is “disgraceful” and entirely political, while panelist Sunny Hostin criticized Republicans for focusing on 1% of the population. Despite the slim percentage of the population that identifies as transgender, Democrats have ignored the majority of the U.S. population’s standpoints by advocating for and passing laws to allow men to use women’s private spaces and to compete in their sports teams.
Co-host Whoopi Goldberg called on society to “reteach people how to act,” comparing the recognition of somebody’s biological sex to the discrimination against racial minorities and women throughout history.
“We are, in this nation, watching what people will do to each other if we don’t reteach people how to act,” Goldberg said. “This will become the norm again. We fought for years to get respect for women, respect for gay folks, respect for trans folks, Asian folks, black folks, white women, black women, women! People! We must be very vigilant on this because if we’re not, this is going to start up again.”
McBride wrote on X that he is focused on serving Delaware in Congress regardless of how he’s “treated by some colleagues.” Self responded to the incident by saying the United States recognizes “two sexes, male and female.”
President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Jan. 20 directing the federal government to recognize only two sexes, male and female.
McBride complied with House Speaker Mike Johnson’s rule that all individuals must use a bathroom aligned with their biological sex on Capitol grounds in response to a resolution brought forth by Republican South Carolina Rep. Nancy Mace, who raised concerns about women’s safety.
